About Us

Shoulder Cat Studio

Shoulder Cat Studio started out as a personal home studio in a 280 square foot garage in 2018, and quickly became a way to share pottery with friends and family. It became a teaching space with individual pottery lessons early in 2021 and raku workshops in the summer for small groups. In 2023, we moved and built up a 445 square foot studio space, and were able to move our kilns to a separate space, making room for a larger workspace and more students. We now offer several weekly classes, with four students each session for an intimate, hands-on experience, specialty workshops, a gallery, and various services to support local artist and home potters.

With a full array of wheel throwing, handbuilding, and slip casting tools, there are many ways to explore pottery and ceramics through classes and one-off sessions for date nights, girl’s night out, raku, kintsugi, surface decoration, and more. With a limit of four students at any time, there is plenty of hands-on guidance to meet your skill level. The studio also offers services such as kiln firings, glaze library access which allows use of our extensive commercial and studio glaze collection (over 200 glazes and 100 underglazes), and tool rentals, perfect for home potters if you do not want to commit to purchasing your own kiln, glazes, and specialty tools.

Julie

Julie is the founder and owner of Shoulder Cat Studio. She is often seen in the studio with Maggie the shoulder cat, who actually owns the studio.

As an industrial organizational psychology practitioner, Julie brings her analytical abilities to the studio adapting her approach to teaching to meet each individual’s skill and abilities as well optimizing the space to foster creativity. With over a decade of experience as adult educator and even more experience as a crafter, specifically as a knitter, sewer, crocheter, soap and lotion maker, potter, and more, Julie brings her never-ending need to learn to encourage others’ curiosity and learning.

Maggie and Lida

The fuzzy studio helpers. Maggie is the shoulder cat and Lida is the studio welcome cat. They prefer getting paid with head scritches and treats.
