Pottery: Handbuilding and Wheel Beginner/Intermediate Tues., Oct 3rd-Nov 14th 6:30 pm-9:30 pm

During this 7-week pottery class, students will learn the basics of hand building and wheel thrown pottery. Bowls and cylinders will be the focus of these sessions. Pottery terminology, skills, and glazing techniques will be discussed.
The class fee includes 25 pounds of clay, oxides, glaze, firings, and a personal shelf. There are general pottery supplies for use in the studio, though personal tool kits are also available to purchase for $15. An apron and towel will also be provided or you can bring your own. Additional clay, firings, special lusters, underglaze transfers and overglaze decals can be purchased for a fee.
A maximum of 4 students will be in the class, allowing for plenty of hands-on guidance as needed.
Sample 7-week schedule for 3 hour sessions:
- Week 1: Review studio best practices. Demo and practice cylinders on the wheel and handbuilt.
- Week 2: Practice cylinders and demo trimming on the wheel.
- Week 3: Practice trimming, demo bowls on the wheel and handbuilt, and practice cylinders and bowls if time. First round of dried pieces will be loaded into kiln for bisque firing.
- Week 4: Practice cylinders and bowls, trim cylinders and bowls. Review and re-demo as needed.
- Week 5: Demo and practice glazing, practice forms, review and re-demo as needed. Demo advanced techniques. Glazed test tiles also get fired.
- Week 6: Discuss test glazes. Free week for glazing and finishing pieces. Any new pieces made, may not be finished prior to end of 7-week classes. Last round of dried pieces will be loaded into kiln for second bisque firing.
- Week 7: Discuss glazed pieces. Practice glazing, cylinders, bowls, and trimming. Glazed pieces loaded into kiln for final glaze firing.
