Surface Decoration Workshop: Overglaze Lusters and Decals – February 2025

Learn to enhance your pottery with overglaze lusters and decals during this one day workshop. During this workshop students will learn how to design and create a decal, or choose from Shoulder Cat Studio designs as well as learn how to use overglaze lusters such as mother of pearl and gold luster. This class is well-suited for experienced beginners who have some experience with pottery and are looking to elevate their pottery. While it will be helpful to have a piece prepared for this session, if you need a piece, you can purchase one for the workshop. Please note, if you bring a piece, it should be recently glazed fired and unused. If your piece has been used and exposed to water, it has the potential to explode during firing and you will be responsible for any kiln damage.
The workshop includes use of overglaze lusters and a custom 8 1/2″ x 11″/A4 sized sheet of overglaze decals. A fitted respirator that can handle volatile organic compounds (VOCs) is required for the workshop. Reusable respirators are available to purchase for $25. An overglaze firing is included in the price of workshop.
An apron, towel, and goggles will be provided, though you can bring your own.
A maximum of 4 students will be in the workshop, allowing for plenty of hands-on guidance as needed. No make up sessions will be offered. Once the class is full, a waitlist will open for the next workshop.

Sliding scale pricing is how we balance the equity scales and we use it to make ceramics education accessible and affordable to all. There are four tiers for pricing. When signing up for this class, please pay what feels right to you and your current finances. This is a trust based system, only you will know what feels comfortable and possible. BIPOC and LGBTQIA2S+ are encouraged to pay the Solidarity and Equity Tiers.
Full-price Tier – This is the actual cost for the workshop.
Solidarity Tier – This is a moderately discounted cost for the workshop.
Equity Tier – This is a further discounted cost for the workshop.
Pay-it-Forward Tier – This is a moderately higher cost for the workshop. This tier helps us continue to offer sliding scale pricing as well as offer low cost workshops.
