Throwing on the Pottery Wheel Open Studio July-August 2024

Note: This is a pet-friendly studio. While cleaning is regularly done, there will most likely be allergens present. Pets are welcomed with permission only.

During mid-July to early August, students will have time to come in to practice throwing on their own. This option is only for current and former students who are familiar with the space. If you have not taken a class at Shoulder Cat Studio, your order will be refunded. Students must attend a virtual orientation in order to access the link to book open studio sessions. During this time, the studio is unmonitored and there is no instruction given. Open studio time is done as a four (4) pack of sessions, and students can sign up for their preferred dates. Dates are first come, first serve for the first 4 students, so sign up early. 

Orientation (virtual or in-person, you only need to attend one):

July 6th 11:00 am-11:45 am

July 9th 7:00 pm-7:45 pm

July 11th 8:00 pm – 8:45 pm

Open Studio Availability between July 16th to August 10th (you can attend any 4 available days)

Tuesdays 6:30 pm-9:30 pm

Thursdays 6:30 pm-9:30 pm

Saturdays 10:00 am-1:00 pm

The fee includes use of the studio space during the month. Students will receive 15 lbs of recycled clay, use of oxides and glaze, one bisque firing, and one glaze firing. Shelf space is communal. 

There are general pottery supplies for use in the studio. Personal tool kits are also available to purchase for $15. An apron and towel will be provided, though you can bring your own. Additional clay, glaze, firings, special lusters, underglaze transfers, and overglaze decals can be purchased for a fee. When available, additional sessions can be purchased for $20 per session.

Bisque firing will occur after week 3, so you can glaze during week 4. Finished pieces will be available to pick up around 2-3 weeks after the last open studio session.

SLIDING SCALE PRICING

Sliding scale pricing is how we balance the equity scales and we use it to make ceramics education accessible and affordable to all. There are four tiers for pricing. When signing up for this open studio please pay what feels right to you and your current finances. This is a trust based system, only you will know what feels comfortable and possible. BIPOC and LGBTQIA2S+ are encouraged to pay the Solidarity and Equity Tiers.

Full-price Tier – This is the actual cost for the open studio.

Solidarity Tier – This is a moderately discounted cost for the open studio.

Equity Tier – This is a further discounted cost for the open studio.

Pay-it-Forward Tier – This is a moderately higher cost for the open studio. This tier helps us continue to offer sliding scale pricing as well as offer low cost workshops.
